Server based computing
Typically applications are deployed, managed, supported and executed on the local machine. But instead the applications can be running in a server . Users remotely connect to and control these "instances" running on the server from a "client" device. Thus the only the screen information is transmitted between the server and client. This method of computing is known generally as "server based computing" and forms the basis for the virtual desktops. When the servers are "virtualised" and multiples virtual machines are hosted in a physical servers , capacity utilization of the the physical server is greatly improved. Several other advantages of virtualisation can also be realized.

The main objective of server based computing and virtual desktop environment is to archive an user experience which is as close as possible to running the applications in a local machine. Since performance of a server based computing solution can depend of so many factors like bandwidth , server hardware , protocols used, multimedia etc it may not be direct replacement for a local machine . But instead it is a judiciously planned solution which has to be arrived at after examining the requirements of the application.
